Why New Years Resolutions Don’t Work!‏

Hey,

About this time of year, it’s customary to make one or many new years resolution. Then at about the end of January (if your lucky), it’s customary to break said resolution.

Think about all the people that you know that have made new years resolutions, and consider what percentage of those people actually stuck to them. If your friends (and you?) are anything like mine, it’s a very low percentage.

Why do you think that is? Let’s consider some typical resolutions. Quite smoking, lose weight, drink less alcohol, exercise more… and so on.

The problem here is… well, there’s a bunch of problems. The first problem is that these are NOT inspiring. Yes, it would be great if you could do all this stuff, but if you look closely, they are all about things you will miss out on.

Quit smoking. This is all about giving something up. How can you possible expect to succeed, if you focus is entirely on what you are missing out on? Why should you achieve that goal? And it’s a similar story with all the others.

My other problem with these resolutions is that they are not nearly specific enough. For example, you go on a diet, you lose a pound by the end of January. GREAT!! You’ve just achieved your resolution, you lost weight. Pointless.

So I say to you – Don’t make  new years resolutions, make goals. Have you ever heard of SMART goals? SMART in this case is an acronym, it stands for:

Specific – Don’t just say I want to lose weight, say I want to lose 10 pounds.
Measurable – You should know exactly when you’ve hit your goal
Achievable – Make it realistic
Resonant – Make sure it’s something that inspires you
Time Frame – And put a due date on it

If you make SMART goals instead of “resolutions”, you are 1000% more likely to achieve something meaningful. So go ahead, sit down for the new year, and set yourself some awesome goals.
Just one more thing. I love this quote, and you should keep it in mind when setting your goals:

“It’s better to aim for the stars and miss, than aim high and miss, than to aim low and hit”

That’s all from me, I hop 2015 brings you everything your heart desires. Have a wonderful and safe new year!!
